Birding Group Marbury Park, 27 June 2023

We managed to fit in the last birding group trip of June which was to Marbury Park followed by a planning session for the next term (and lunch) at the Spinner and Bergamot pub. We started out, as usual, by going down to the screen that overlooks the lake and reed bed. We could see a cloud of Sand Martins flying over the water and a few Swallows were also hawking around. The usual large numbers of Coots were on the water but fewer Great Crested Grebes were there than one might have expected. A Reed Warbler was singing fromt he reed bed. After a while, I decided to have a look behind us at the bushed where I could hear Blackcaps singing but also something else.

I stood still for a while until I saw a pair of rather inconspicuous brown birds bobbing around inside a tree. One fo them started to sing and a quick rererral to Collins (audio) confirmed what I suspected; it was a pair of Garden Warblers. Reference to the Merlin app (which everyone uses now) confirme this so this made for an excellent year tick. They stayed there for long enough and then returned repeatedly so that it was possible to point them out to others in the group and we even had time to compare details of plumage with Collins.

I don’t know how many Song Thrushes there are in Marbury Park but you are constantly surrounded by them no matter where you are in the park. Other song that we regularly heard was from Chiffchaff and even a single Skylark was singing from within the pasture land. As we walked though the woods a Buzzard clattered through the branches of the trees flying off into the distance.

It was a good morning out and made all the better for the (for me) rare sighting of Garden Warbler – something to celebrate at the pub where we all had lunch and planned the next term’s schedule.
