Birding Group Marbury Park 14th December 2021
A mixture of bad weather and Covid worries limited our birding in early December so we only got out for one birding group outing and that was to Marbury Park on 14th December. Unfortunately there was a heavy mist all the way there so visibility on the water was poor and limited to just the nearside of the water. Still, we managed to get a good year tick in the woods later in the day.
This was the fist time for us at Narbury since the hide was burned down by vandals. It was very strange to see how open it all was and how little footprint it had actually taken up. The feeders were still there but the birds are so used to people by now that they didn’t seem over bothered by seeing lots of people; they perhaps spent less time on the feeders but they still came – especially the Nuthatches which we saw a lot of during the day. We managed to get Goldeneye and Great Crested Grebe on the water and a few of the usual suspects but we were mainly limited to the woods and the millions of dog walkers that spoil it so much.
We had good views of Mistle Thrush and othe r woodland birds but by far the best was our first flcok of at least 40 Redwing feeding on the ground and flitting between trees. A nice ending to a relatively short and uneventful walk. Covid conditions mean that there may be real doubts whether we meet up again for a while – even in to the new year. We will have to see.
