RSPB Marshside 23rd November 2021

The birding group were going to be visiting Burton but a last minute change of heart tookus to RSPB Marshside where we had hoped to see any of the Snow Buntings, Twite, Greater Scaup or Glossy Ibis which has been seen in recent days. We saw none of these! However, we had a good morning there and managed to get a couple of year ticks including a ringtail Hen Harrier over the marsh near the sea and four Red-legged Partridge from the screen near the car park, the latter being a bit of a surprise.

For once the wind was quite mild and the rain even held off until the point that we were leaving anyway. We also saw a number of Stonechat on the marsh and we got a male Sparrowhawk from the hide and also a Kestrel over the marsh. So, quite a good day for birds of prey.

There were lots of Pink-footed Geese and Wigeon all over the area and some nice looking Pintails and a huge flock of Lapwings.

Some of the group headed off home after we left Marshside but we dropped in at WWT Martin Mere briefly.
