August 2021 Summary
UK Species Year List to August 2021: 127
Total UK Species in August 2021: 59
New “Year Ticks” in August 2021: 7
New “Life Ticks” in August 2021: 0
The relaxing of Covid lockdown meant that we were able to take a modest holiday for a week. We went to stay with friends Somerset and on the way there (and back) we stopped off at WWT Slimbride. We also managed a trip to RSPB Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath. It wasn’t the best time of year for birding but we still managed to get seven year ticks.
Our first trip of the month was a visit to WWT Slimbridge on 20th August 2021 where six of our seven year ticks. The best bird of the day was fairly distant but clear views of a pair of Common Cranes. Whilst staying with friends in Montacute, we managed to fit in a trip to RSPB Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath on the 23rd August 2021. We didn’t see anything much there but it was a nice walk on a warm day.
On our way back home we dropped in at WWT Slimbridge on 26th August 2021. One final year tick happened when we stopped off for a day at Pershore and a walk down by the river produced our first Kingfisher of the year.
Compared to previous years, this year and this August has been disappointing for birds. In 2019 at the end of August we had seen 176 UK species; in 2020 it was 91 at the same point and this year it hended up as 126. A couple of years of Covid has restricted our birding a lot but we hope things will get better.
