We had a birding group day lined up to be for RSPB Leighton Moss but reports on their web site and also by worl of mouth suggested that large parts of the reserve were under water so we decided to swop over to WWT Martin Mere where we had a reasonable day and good weather.
What we hadn’t thought about was that it was half-term, and with Halloween appraoching there were millions of children in all the main areas of the reserve. Fortunately for us, they rarely spill over into the main hides so as long as you could get to those it was relatively quiet.
There were only a few Whooper Swans around but fair numbers of Pink-footed Geese. Waders were a bit in short supply and we did not see the suggested Bramblings but we had a reasonable set of sightings and a really good view of a Kingfisher was probably the best sighting of the day.
