Birding Group Burton Mere Wetlands : 27th November 2018

The last birding group outing of November was meant to be a trip down the Welsh coast but the weather was so bad that we changed it to Burton. Even then there were only five of us turned out due to a poor weather forecast which was a shame because we got some good sightings before the rain came down heavily.

We decided to head straight down to Inner Marsh Farm before the rains started for the day which turned out to be a good idea. On the way down we got a flock of Linnet but the best sightings were in a single willow bush where we got Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Long-tailed Tit, Blur Tit, Great Tit, Siskin, Goldcrest and even a Treecreeper.

Down at the hide we walked in as a Peregrine was blasting its way through a flock of birds and we had good views until it disappeared behind the trees at the back of the reserve. We also got a couple of Marsh Harriers and some Snipe and Curlew and lots of very attractive Wigeon.

We reurned to the main hise viia the Marsh Covert hide where we added Redshank and Dunlin to our list for the day and as we approached the main reception hide we got a Great Spotted Woodpecker. The rain was now quite heavy so we decided to call it a day and drop down to Parkgate and the south side where we thought we would look for the recently sighted Bittern but to no avail. A pair of Marsh Harriers were floating around despite the heavy rain and a single Great White Egret was down in the marsh. From the comfort of a Boathouse window seat we finished off with a single Buzzard
