Apart from our Scottish holiday, which covered part of August and is summarised elsewhere, we had a day out on the 16th when we went to Burton Mere Wetlands and Connah’s Quay. At the former we got Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Hobby as well as a Green Sandpiper – a good year tick. The latter wasn’t as spectacular but still had interesting sightings. On th2 24th we went to RSPB Leighton Moss where we also had a great bird of prey day with Buzzard, Kestrel. Peregrine, Marsh Harrier, Merlin and even an Osprey ! The highpoint though was the UK life tick of Purple Heron. On the very last day of August we headed up to the Wirral to check out some places we had not been to before – such as Leosowe Lighthouse – but we tried for the Pectoral Sandpiper there in the morning but met with no luck. We dropped in again on our return homewards and got lucky with fairly good views of this “year tick”
