Chosely Drying Barns & Titchwell NWT 11th May 2016

The second half of our day was going to be closer to home. After a snack in Wells-upon-the-Sea, we drove off to Chosely Drying Barns to look for Dotterel again. We did find a few again but they were much more distant and the views were not as good as before. Of greater pleasure was a “life tick ” found sitting on a wire overhead, overhead, and being responded to by another bird.

Although I have seen a Corn Bunting in Mallorca, I have never managed to see one in Britain. Chosely is supposed to be a good place to find them but on our first visit it didn’t seem likely. This time, however, we got three of the alleged specialties of the area, Dotterel, Corn Bunting and Yellowhammer!

Rather pleased with this we eventually set off for a couple of hours at Titchwell NWT at the end of the day. We didn’t know what we would find but, as usual, it is pot luck.

A couple of hours late in the afternoon at Titchwell is possibly not the best scheduling but it was still pretty good with two Marsh Harriers, Reed and Sedge Warblers heard and seen. Ringed and Little Ringed Plover, Little Egret and Grey Plovers. Ducks included Shoveler, Shelduck, Gadwall, Pochard, Teal and Mallard.

It seems that we are now something of experts at distinguishing the one Temminck’s Stint from the multitude of Common Sandpipers in the woods and shrubs were singing Cettis, Song Thrush, Robin and Chiffchaff. Another great day that started with heavy drizzle and ended with a beautiful sunset.
