Day Out To Lymm Dam : 5th June 2011
We wanted a walk within a short drive from home so we decided to go to Lymm Dam. The weather was a bit damp and a little rain fell from time to time but we were able to walk around the main part of the site without getting too wet. We walked from the car park (free) just off the A56 and walked along the east side of Middle Dam along the wooded pathway where we immediately saw (and heard) a Song Thrush really low down in a tree so we got very good views. I also thought I saw a Nuthatch but it flew off so quickly I couldn’t claim it as a definite spot.
We then crossed at Crosfield Bridge and returned along the west side (we did not go into the densely willowed “The Bongs” area though). On our way back we heard (but did not see) a Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming and a few Chiffchaffs. On the water we could see a lot of Mallards and their young as well as a Great Crested Grebe, a couple of Cormorants etc. We also encountered a Robin family (one adult and four fledglings) When we got back to the main road we crossed over that and walked along “The Dingle” where we saw several Grey Wagtails.
At Lymm village we had a drink at the pub at the side of the Bridgewater Canal. We intended to walk along the canal and cross further up, returning along the Trans Pennine Trail and crossing back over to the village but it started raining quite heavily so we returned to the car.
