Mirador Del Rio & Guinate , Lanzarote : 5th March 2016
Our final day with a car took us up to the Mirador Del Rio where Gosney says there is a good chance of seeing Barbary Falcon and even informs the reader of the exact ledge to find one on. Well, as it turned out, we looked at that ledge straight away and there it was !
We got very good views of it but before I could set up some “video-scoping” it flew over our heads and off to the west. From the viewpoint we could see some birds down in the salt pans underneath the mirador but the only birds we could make out – even with the scope at full magnification – was a pair od Ruddy Shelduck.
We also got a nice group of Ravens flying over us and one even perched quite close to the mirador. A Kestrel surprised me by flying up from underneath me on the balcony before hovering over the top and diappearing out of sight.
After waiting for quite some time to see if the Barbary Falcon would come back we gave up and drove onto the viewpoint just past the Guinate Wildlife Park. This is supposed to be good for Barbary Falcons and Eleanora’s Falcons in the season but all we saw was more Ravens and little groups of Linnet snd individuals Berthelot’s Pipits.
On our drive back home we came across a group of twenty Cattle Egrets all arranged in tiers on a craggy hillside looking rather ornamental as they fed.
