Lanzarote : 16th February 2015

The 16th February was the last day of our holiday so we had to sort the hire car out and pack our bags etc. We did manage a last visit to the Salinas de Janubio though.  At first this seemed to be astonishingly empty, perhaps because of some recent heavy rain and a lot of tourists walking the surrounding paths. A bit more investigation did uncover some of the usual suspects, though, and another first for us in Lanzarote.

Once more, instead of working the landward edge of the lagoon, we walked along the seaward side. Eventually at the very far side of the lagoon we discovered a group of Black-winged Stilts and a pair of Common Sandpipers.  There was also a single Ruddy Shelduck sitting on a rock and on the grass behind a Whimbrel was pacing about. Unfortunately they were quickly off when they detected us but they never go far and soon came near us again. There were also a couple of Redshank and another bird that caused us some identification headaches.  At first we took it for a Whimbrel but closer examination from a better angle showed that it to be a Black-tailed Godwit.

Strangely, we only saw a single Black-necked Grebe this time. You could say that this was a bit of a disappointing visit to the salt pans but we still got some good birds and a real id teaser.
