Birding Group Visit to Marbury Park : 28th October 2014

The birding group day out this week was supposed to be to RSPB Conwy and Llanfairfechan but a combination of a poor weather forecast, school mid-term and some flu meant that we were reduced to a group of five and we decided to just have a morning at Marbury Park. It wasn’t a particularly outstanding morning but the weather held and it was quite warm and there was a nice feel of autumn in the air and there were some nice birds.

From the first hide overlooking the pool some of the group spotted a Kingfisher but really it was the usual suspects. We decided to go back to the main path and walk a bit further along until we reached the signpost about the reed bed and we dropped down into the woods to join the boardwalk that runs along the edge of the reed bed.

Here there were small groups of mixed Tits and Finches and we also saw a few Redwing and a single Goldfinch. Some of us saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker and others Jays

We walked down to the benches at the end of the path and after a look around the surrounding trees we headed back and along the path that leads to Forge Brook. On the lawns at the far side of the mere were very large numbers of Canada Geese and a few Greylangs. Also on the grass were many Coots and a smattering of Curlew.

Over at the feeder station the predominant bird was the Nuthatch. It was actually quite hard to count then as they were so busy going to and fro between the trees and the feeders. A Kestrel showed itself briefly and others spotted Buzzard. As well.

A last minute Wren just as we were leaving was a pleasant, if modest, end to a birding morning that was like this in general – a pleasant stroll in the woods on an autumn morning.
