Birding Group Visit to Poynton Park and Bramhall Woods 27th February 2012
The scheduled visit to Bramhall Park woods was slightly altered so we could go to Poynton Park to try to see the Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers that have been widely seen there. Unfortunately we didn’t see any. This was not the first time I had tried to see these birds but this time I was hoping that with a local member of the group and lots of eyes would be luckier but it wasn’t to be.
In fact it was all a bit of a letdown ; there were not even as many birds as we had seen there a week or so ago. There were some Canada Geese, Mute Swans and Mallards, a Goosander and a Great Crested Grebe but that was about it for the lake. Among the trees were some Redwing and Long-tailed Tits but otherwise it was just the usual suspects. We went on to Bramhall hoping for better as there is sometimes a Kingfisher there but here, again, it was all disappointment. The only highlight was a Grey Wagtail which was a first for us for the year.
How We Got There
We actually parked just at the junction of Bramhall Park Road and Linney Road and walked back downhill along Bramhall Park Road, crossing the road to enter the woods there. We followed a path and a bridge that leads to the ponds there. Apparently the group normally approaches this slightly differently and they park further away and walk through some meadows to the same place.
