My birding month was dominated by catching flu and the three weeks following that while I slowly recovered. As a result of that, I only managed the first and last birding group outings of March.
The first trip was to Burton Mere Wetlands on 3 March 2026 but we also took in Parkgate and Neston Old Quay. There were at least 100 Avocets at Burton and we also got a Mediterranean Gull. Siskin and Goldcrest were nice additions also.
I did not get to any of the next sessions until the very last one which was Marbury Park on 31 March 2026 which was followed by the planning meeting to work up the schedule for post-Easter. The Song Thrushes were in good voice and we even got a few straggler Redwings. Nice views of Kingfishers and a Mink added to the pleasure of seeing the first large flock of Sand Martins of the year.
In the garden spring is starting to happen and we had some work done on the garden fences before things really start to sprout. We continue to have Parakeet problems but perhaps not as many visiting the feeders as there used to be. A Wren is seen frequently and there has been a pair of Robins and a Dunnock, which is singing regularly from somewhere close by. The meal worms are gobbled up by the ground feeding birds that can get in the cage. Still no sign of a hedgehog this year, sadly.
