WWT Slimbridge 30-31 October 2025

We had to go down to Bristol for the funeral of a friend so, to buck ourselves up a bit and to break up the return journey we stopped of at Slimbridge for an overnight stay that allowed us to get an afternoon visit one day and a morning visit the next day.

On the 30th we had to re-register our membership having intentionally let it lapse due to my dissatisfaction with the rising costs of membership. It wasn’t particularly full of life with just the usual birds around and no sight of any Cranes. However we did get Spotted Redshank on the South Lake and year tick Green Sandpiper and Temminck’s Stint on from the Rushy hide. A lot of the bird collection had been taken inside due to the suspected presence of bird flu so the reserve was quite quiet and it was probably a bit early in the year for some of the more interesting wintering geese etc.

We did the stretch from the reception down to the Estuary Tower where we did see some Barnacle Geese but apart from lots of Wigeon and Teal that was about that. We did get very good views of a Chiffchaff with some Long-tailed Tits from the Estuary Tower, looking down into the treetops below.

So, it was a bit quiet but it allowed us to decompress from the funeral and we always enjoy staying at the Tudor Arms at Slimbridge; apart from the rooms now costing £160 a night!!
