We resumed the birding group mornings out with the first visit of the autumn term which was to Pennington Flash on 23rd September 2025. We didn’t see a lot but it was good to get back to some birding.
The following week we went to Burton Mere Wetlands on 30th September 2025. Again we didn’t see too much but it was another pleasant day. The one good year tick we did get, was a Water Rail. The group went on to Inner Marsh Farm but there was so little around we decided to head off to Little Neston where we got Marsh Harrier and Sparrowhawk to add to our Buzzard, Kestrel and Raven from Burton making it quite a nice raptor day.
In the garden things are quiet; my new feeder has at least made it difficult for more than one Parakeet to latch on to it at one time. A few birds are starting to come to the feeders – especially if it is wet. I watched from the back widow as one of the neighbours mauled a juvenile Collared Dove. It had done too much damage for me to stop it trashing one of the wings of the bird. I chased it away but the bird cowered at the back of the Mahonia where it couldn’t be reached. I was hoping that it might be waiting for dark to make an escape but it died in the night so the carcass is still there; the cat didn’t even bother to take it home.
