Barn Owls in Chorlton 17th August 2024
We were told by some neighbours who had been out dog walking that two adult Barn Owls and two chicks had been seen in a field near Brookburn school. The weather has been dry some days and wet others so we took the chance on the next day it was dry and we were not disappointed.
We took the cobbled path just after Brookburn bridge and walked down until we got to the rough field on the left. On the right side of the field there was an Owl box with two Owls sitting in the opening. After a while, first one, then the other, took to the air making room for one of the chicks to take their place in the opening. We spent about half an hour watching them quarter the field before retiring to The Bowling Green for a celebratory drink. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a Barn Owl and this was certainly the first time I had seen three!
