Birding Group Visit to Burton Mere Wetlands & Denhal Quay 30th September 2025

Our last birding group visit of the month was to Burton Mere Wetlands on a lovely sunny day with fantastic visibility all the way over to the Welsh hills. There were plenty of ducks but not many species. We did get a year first bird, though.

We started off at the reception hide but I soon moved outdoors to get a better view. There were hundreds of ducks on the water, but they were mostly asleep with their heads tucked in. There were hundreds of Shovelers and good numbers of Teal and a smattering of Mallards and Black-tailed Godwits but a scan of the length of the main water, where the reeds meet the water, tuned up my first Water Rail of the year. We all got onto it, even though it was dipping in and out of cover all the time. There were a lot of Geese flying overhead with some skeins landing; they were mainly Greylag with a few Canada Geese but one flock was definitely Pink-footed Geese, We did well to get a Buzzard and a Kestrel.

We went down to the barn and just enjoyed the nice, sunny day without seeing too much. Walking down to the Marsh Covert hide, we found it to be pretty much empty of birds. The same was true of the Bridge hide. Looking down towards Inner Marsh Farm looked the same so we decided to go down to do some pub-side birding and were almost immediately rewarded with a Grey Wagtail. Out on the marsh we found a Sparrowhawk on a post and, eventually, we got out first Marsh Harrier of the day. Curlew and Great Egret were nice additions and so we called it a day and returned home.
