Birding Group Visit to Pennington Flash 20 May 2025

Our visit to Pennington Flash saw us enjoy another fine day but the water levels were incredibly low and some of the ponds had dried out entirely. There was a dry area of about six feet from the ends of the main lake. This meant that the bodies of water weren’t the main interest for us. Instead, it was the woods that were the main attraction of the day with incessant bird song as Blackcaps, Wrens and Robins all fought to be the loudest. There were also Willow Warblers and CHiffchaffs and also a single Whitethroat.

When we worked our way round to the Bunting Hide we were a little disappointed to see that there was no food on the bird tables or in the feeders. This meant that there were not many species of birds. There were a lot of Dunnocks and we got singles of both Stock Dove and Greenfinch. The one year-tick we managed all day was from this hide where we got a single male Bullfinch.

So, not the greatest of days for birding but some good exercise on a sunny day surrounded by bird song. Sometimes it’s not the quantity of species but the atmosphere that is uplifting.
