WWT Martin Mere 18 Mar 2025

After our morning at RSPB Marshide, we stopped off at WWT Martin Mere for a cup of tea and then had a look around. With limited time and the United Utilities hide still closed (though repair work has begun) we restricted ourselves to the area between the Ron Barker Hide and the Discovery hide. Even then, we still managed to get a couple of year ticks and a good species list.

We headed off to the Ron Barker first and then slowly walked back up the path. Things were pretty quiet at Ron Barker but on the way back we got year tick Tree Sparrow and on the scrape we managed to get a smallish number of Whooper Swans before they leave – a year tick for 2025. Also Wigeon was a year tick but all the usual wide range of ducks etc. were present. The best year tick was a Mediterranean Gull that took a little finding, but we got there in the end.

We only spent about ninety minutes there but got a nice selection of birds and added to our morning at RSPB Marshside we ended up with a good number of species and ten year ticks.
