Neumann’s Flash 8th February 2022
On 8th February we had a birding group trip to Neumann’s Flash on what was quite a mild and dry morning. We took the usual route round the site and, as is often the case, there weren’t many species on the water; a couple of Wigeon, a single Tufted Duck and lots of Gulls and Coots. Most of the interesting birds were in the woodlands and we got a good couple of early year ticks there.
First up was a Goldcrest, followed shortly by a small group of Redpolls. There were the expected Goldfinch and Greenfinch, Blackbirds, Robins ans such. One of the better sightings was a small group of Redwings which have been few and far between this winter. I saw thee Buzzards displaying above us but others saw as many as five all cricling each other! We dipped out on perhaps the best bird of the day – a Water Rail from Pog’s Hide but so did a most of the group. Not a bad morning out. I didn’t take my scope because I often feel that the best birds are in the woods not on the water.
