30th November 2021 Birding Group Visit to Burton Mere Wetlands
The last birding group day out of November was to Burton Mere Wetlands. We didn’t bother going down to Inner Marsh Farm but we had a nice walk on a day that threatened rain but kept dry for us.
On the main scrape were the usual suspects, Teal, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen and such. On one of the islands we got a pair of Egyptian Geese (year ticks) and further back in the fields there were Greylag, Canada and Pink-footed Geese.
On other parts of the reserve we got Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Gadwall, Shoveler and Shelduck. A Marsh Harrier and Kestrel showed well and down at the feeders we got Greenfinch, Goldfinch and the usual Tits. By the banks of the drain that runs down to the Bridge, we got a nice Grey Wagtail foraging along the edges and a Great Spotted Woodpecker in the trees behind. There were Cetti’s calling on the way down. At the Bridge Screen we got an unusual view of a 8 or 10 Curlew all in the water splashing and bathing – a really lovely sight and so unusual.
So, it turned out to be a not too bad day and a relief to get out. The new strain of Coronavirus, Omicron, may spell the end of hides being open again soon enough as cases rise rapidly.
