Birding Group Visit To Moore Nature Reserve 16th April 2019
The birding group had a morning at Moore Nature Reserve followed by a lunchtime planning session for the next “term”. Although it was a relatively short morning we did manage to get some good birds with “year tick” Goldcrests and plenty of Treecreepers and Nuthatches. No Lesser SPotted Woodpeckers, though, just GSW and a heard Green Woodpecker. The highlight of the day was actually at the pub afterwards where we had our planning session.
The waitress told us othat a pair of Goldcrests had often been seen on a potted tree just outside the window of the pub. We took this with a bit of a pinch of salt until they actually appeared jumping up at the window and peckeing at the glass. It seemed likely that they were reacting to their own reflections because the male had his hackles – or crest – up and was showing beautifully. We saw the male and the female for about ten minutes at a distance of a few feet – all whilst having a pint !
