Burton Mere Wetlands 28th March 2019

Our last birding outing of the month was a solo affair and again featured Burton Mere Wetlands. We were rather hoping that we could see the Long-tailed Duck that has been there. Also we wanted to check out the walk from Denhall Lane, past Net’s Cafe and on to the Denhall Quay and The Harp Inn.

We wanted to try for the Long-tailed duck so we headed straight for Inner Marsh Farm hide but it turned out to be usually seen on the deep pool way to the right of the Inner Marsh Farm hide and, although you can see it from that hide, the sun was so strong that it was hard to make out any of the birds – everything was a black silhouette. Nobody we met had seen it that day ‘though it is probably a lot easier to see later in the afternoon. Be that as it may we had a nice morning and a very sunny one at that.

After Inner Marsh Farm we walked up to the Point hoping perhaps to get a Wheatear but our only year first warblers were Chiffchaff of which many were singing and we managed to see three of them. We also managed to one of the many Cetti’s Warblers singing along the path to the Bridge Pool.

We did try for the Bearded Tits and we were standing in a crowd of people at the Reed Screen blind when one chap claimed he could see two right in front of us. Unfortunately none of the other eight people with us could see them so perhaps he was a troll. In any case they have been showing pretty well of late even if you need a lot of patience to see them.

The big year tick for us was three Spotted Redshank from the Marsh Covert Hide. All in all though it was a beautiful day for a  walk around the reserve.

We left there and decided to cjheck out Decca Pools which are supposed to be accessed off a path along the road from the bottom of from Denhall Lane, just past Net’s Cafe. We did find it but it says private property and I reckoned that we would have to walk a long way up the path and then get round the back of some buildings to access the pools. We thought it was a long walk to get into trouble so I decided that we should find out more about access. At least we know where it is now.

We walked along to The Harp Inn for a drink and a cheese toastie and then returned. It is about a mile ech way and although we didn’t see any birds of note, we had a good walk and I even got a little sun burned.
