Upper Goyt Valley 29th May 2018
Our annual visit to the Goyt Valley saw a little bit of a dip in the weather; it has been a bit of a mini heatwave the last week or so. Still, it remained dry for us and we had a nice walk. Unfortunately – and unusually – we dis not see any Redstart at all. The lack of Pied Flycatchers here is, unfortunately, a common observation by birders at the site over the last couple of years.
We did better with Pied FLycatchers and Tree Pipits both of which we saw several examples of, some very close up. Both of these were year ticks but also , surprisingly, was Common Sandpiper which I would have expected to see earlier in the year. We also had close views of several Willow Warblers.
We continued down to the quarry where we usually look for Ring Ousel but we didn’t have any luck with these. We did get year tick Wheatear, though so it wasn’t entirely a waste of a visit. It had got quite windy and cold by then so we called it a day. We still got four year ticks over the day so we weren’t too disappointed.
