WWT Slimbridge 20th August 2016
We started our 10-day holiday driving from Manchester to Slimbridge which we usually use as a convenient break stop on our way to Montacute in Somerset. We stayed at The Tudor Arms near to the WWT Slimbridge reverve which is our favoured hostelry in the area. It is also just a few hundred metres from the reserve. We drove straight to the reserve and had a look at pretty much all the hides and finding some of the expected Slimbridge specialities.
At the South Lake Hide we saw eight Cranes on the far side on the land at the edge of the water. There were plenty of Black-tailed Godwits and afair spread of ducks and a good number of Redshank. Over at the Rushy Pen we got a “year tick” in the shape of two Green Sandpipers and we also got Greenshank, Ruff and some Snipe. Over the water there was a large flock of Sand Martins. Elsewhere on the site we enjoyed the resident flock of Barnacle Geese.
All in all we had a really good visit though the weather was pretty poor. We also had a chance to pay another brief visit the next day before heading off to Montacute.
