Thornham 11th May 2016
Because of the heavy drizzle first thing in the morning, I did not take my usual morning walk but the evening made up for it. On our walk to the pub, which is timed to be at Barn Owl showing time, we were still getting Reed and Sedge Warblers singing and when we saw a large white shape we thought we were in luck.
We were but it wasn’t a Barn Owl that we saw but what we took to be a male Hen Harrier, quartering the reeds and eventually dropping down into them. We waited a long time for either it to reappear or a Barn Owl to show. Neither did but what a plus, just for a short diversion en route to the pub. As it happens, we are pretty sure that the bird we saw wasn’t a Hen Harrier after all (and for reasons explained in the next post) but a Montagu’s Harrier -even better as this gives us a “year tick” as well as a “holiday tick”.
