Lakenheath Fen 2nd May 2016

We drove from Wicken Fen to Lakenheath Fen as part of our Peterborough to Halesworth journey. The afternoon had started to look a bit gloomy but we felt we had a fair chance of getting to the first hide and back before the rain fell. It was a bit of a rushed walk out there but we did manage to get Whitethroat and Dunnock. We started to hear a Cuckoo and this was a feature of our visit to Lakenheath Fen as we continued to hear what must have been several Cuckoos.

Cetti’s Warblers were I  evidence all around the site. When we got to the first hide we had splendid views of a flock of around 20 Swifts, all flying over the wat.
er. On the water there was a smattering of ducks but the best was the pair of Marsh Harriers we saw and the pair of Hobbies that showed so well that you could make out all their identifying features. As we sat there we also heard a Bittern boom in the distance a couple of times.
We walked back along the river getting more Whitethroat and a single Common Tern flying over the lake on the other side of the river.

We eventually got back to the reception just as the rain started to fall. There was just time for a quick cup of tea before we had to get going to Halesworth.
