Tatton Park and the 100th Species of the year: 16th February 2016
Tatton Park and the 100th Species of the year: 16th February 2016
The birding group had a blank slot this Tuesday and we decided to fill it with a visit to Tatton Park as our previous visit there was stymied in part by the closure of Dog Wood as a result of high winds. We thought that on a very cold, bright and dry morning at our disposal we decided to try again. As it happened Dog Wood was well named today and there were so many dogs there that it was a real distraction from what was a lovely morning for a walk.
As we walked though Dog Wood we could hear three Woodpeckers drumming loudly and quite nearby. Most of us didn’t quite manage to see them but they were certainly there. As we walked through the wood there were plenty of Tits and Finches and a single Stock Dove, a pair of Jays and Nuthatches. The best spot was my 99th bird of the year – a Treecreeper !
On the water there were several Goldeneye and some Pochard but, other than that, only the usual suspects. We saw a Kestrel and dropped in at the hide but it was pretty much the same there with only a few Pochard shining in the bright sunshine standing out.
As we walked back up the hill to take the high road back to the Dog Wood gate I got my 100th species for the year – a pair of Ravens kronking loudly as they flew overhead. Overall, a bit of an average day but it was the 100th specied for me so that was nice.
