Neumann’s Flash and Haydn’s Pool : 15th October 2013

Neumann’s Flash and Haydn’s Pool : 15th October 2013

Although we had just got back from holiday in Scotland, I was still keen to go to the birding group visit to Neumann’s Flash and Haydn’s Pool. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my notebook so have to recall the birds from memory. We took the right hand path from the main road and there were a number of birds around including Long-tailed Tits and throughout the site there were a lot of Jays busy to-ing and fro-ing collecting and storing acorns by their thousands. From the first hide overlooking the Flash we could see around a dozen Snipe and in amongst them there was a single Golden Plover.

There were lots of Teal and Mallards and a single Grey Heron. We walked round to Haydn’s Pool which was occupied by a single Grey Heron. In fact it was surprising that there was even that present because the water had almost entirely gone. As we left the blind we saw a Song Thrush perched just outside and we also saw the obligatory Kestrel. When we got to the hide on the opposite side of the Flash we ran into a volunteer who was very disgruntled about the lack of upkeep of the site by the council. He was a volunteer and she said that many of the volunteers had good ideas for developing and maintaining the site but they were never even listed to at meetings and he said they were regarded as free labour not entitled to have any input at these meetings !

Anyway, from this side it was clear that there were at least twenty Golden Plovers spread about and on the water there were Teal, Tufted Ducks and Black-headed Gulls.
